This UC Davis presentation featured performance computing in medicine. Dr. Igor Vorobyov, PhD, discussed how researchers at the University of California, Davis are using Oracle Cloud to support drug testing in cardiology. This virtual workshop focused on the InCommon Trusted Access Platform packaged software —  including configuration and operation. Both the Identity and Service Provider packages can be pre-configured to integrate out of the box with the InCommon Federation using recommended defaults.

This technical tutorial is intended for all users of Cloud Connect who want to understand the technical details of using the Cloud Connect portal to make connections to AWS Direct Connect, Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute, or Google Cloud Platform Partner Interconnect. We will begin the webinar with a brief overview of Internet2 Networking for Cloud (including I2PX, Cloud Connect, and Rapid Private Interconnect (RPI), and then we will talk about the process of requesting the service. We briefly review the progress made by the community in updating Internet Routing Registry (IRR) information for I2PX’s routing policy. We discuss future goals for meeting more stringent IRR requirements, as well as the need to publish a policy for Internet2’s R&E network. View the recording.

Learn more about the latest updates to the HECVAT and how they help to address the Higher Education community’s cloud security assessment needs. In collaboration with EDUCAUSE and the REN-ISAC, Internet2 hosted this free virtual session in order to solicit community feedback on how the HECVAT is working and how assists the community with its cloud security assessment. This special session featured a conversation and discussion about race, diversity, and inclusivity in today’s world. It serves as the first of many conversations for the research and education community and featured a keynote address by Avis Yates Rivers, President and CEO of Technology Concepts Group International, LLC, and nationally recognized thought-leader. Avis provided a historical context of systemic racially motivated behavior. Through the sharing of real-life stories, varying perspectives, and personal experiences, the community can then learn and apply practical steps to help break down barriers by understanding real awareness of the issues around us.

At the conclusion of the keynote, attendees had the opportunity to ask questions before moving into additional deep-dive breakout sessions on several topics.

Tuesday, October 6
The first keynote address, “Science at the Speed of Infection: NIH Responds to the Pandemic with Academic Researchers,” was presented by Andrea Norris, Chief Information Officer of the National Institutes of Health and Mike Tartakovsky, Chief Information Officer of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and Director Office of Cyber Infrastructure and Computational Biology, and will focus on research challenges in the era of the pandemic.

The second keynote address, “From the Campus to the Cloud: Delivering High-Speed, Scalable Network Capabilities to Enable NOAA Science,” featured Zachary Goldstein, NOAA Chief Information Officer and Director, High Performance Computing, and Robert Sears, NOAA N-Wave Director. Marla Meehl, Section Head of the Network Engineering and Telecommunications Section, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, and Manager of the Front Range GigaPoP, will moderate the session, which will focus on N-Wave’s evolution and expansion to serve all NOAA missions—from the surface of the sun to the depths of the ocean floor.

Wednesday, October 7
Day 2 of the TechEXtra Kickoff focused on advanced networking. Participants received detailed technical updates on the roll-out of the Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI) project, including: A View of the New Internet2 Network Infrastructure from a Node Near You; automating the NGI network; and the deployment and transition plan. Many of these sessions will also feature short lightning talks and we will end the day with a group discussion.

Hosted by the Presidential Primary Resources Project and held from August-October, the series offers online interactive programs with educators from the National Archives and Presidential Libraries and is suitable for students in grades 2-12. View the recordings.

Learn how to develop a community cloud service review framework and see results of a community survey on cloud standards, presentation on the scorecard concept, and next steps for the effort that help institutions in the evaluation of cloud applications and service options that continue to grow. When the University of Michigan moved to remote operations in March, faculty asked the CIO for a way to emulate the in-person process for “office hours” (during which students line up for one-on-one meetings). Eric Boyd, U-M’s Director of Networks, and his team created a web application called Remote Office Hours Queue to “queue up’” students. The app allows professors and TAs to share queues (or a large queue as a team), if necessary, cutting the wait time for students. This pattern is used for many other services, including academic advising. This session also features the source code so you can apply it to your campus. View the recording.

COVID-19 Next Steps: Preparing for Fall 2020 Semester and Beyond

In this session, higher education institutions, in collaboration with the NET+ LMS providers (Blackboard, Desire2Learn, and Instructure Canvas) outlined their plans for the upcoming fall semester. This includes lessons learned in shifting focus from in-person learning environments due to the COVID-19 pandemic and impacts on higher education and each service provider. Institutions and LMS providers also talked about how they are preparing for online learning environments in the fall. View the recording.

Transitioning to an Online Learning Environment ‘On the Fly’ During COVID-19

This vendor-agnostic panel discussion features higher education LMS thought leaders and LMS owners. They will focus this discussion on how the existing LMS technology and support helped prepare higher education institutions to deal with the transition to ALL online instruction and remote learning, and the implications of doing so. Panelists will focus on sharing: lessons learned; opportunities for improvement; best practices that may benefit the research and education community, and more. View the recording.

The evolving nature of digital humanities is creating an expanding need for big data, fast networks and high performance computing systems to support the access and visualization requirements. These projects require new collaboration among technologists, scholars, librarians and others. This presentation focuses on two projects that exemplify these collaborations and the significant IT contributions needed in supporting 21st Century humanities research and teaching.

Early in his career as a network engineer, while interviewing at a large networking company, the interview team lead told Dan, “You have an impressive-looking resume. But we don’t really care about that.” He pointed at a whiteboard. “Tell us exactly how a packet is built, travels across a network, and arrives at a destination host, and don’t leave anything out.” Dan nervously stood up and started drawing and telling the story of the life of a packet. Heads nodded and he got the job, although he didn’t stay long before he decided to go back to work at Clemson. Today, any time someone asks Dan how a network works, he stands in front of a whiteboard and tells the story of the life of a packet. View the recording

Exploring Clouds for Acceleration of Science (E-CAS,) is a project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF Award #1904444) that is being administered and coordinated by Internet2 in collaboration with commercial cloud service providers. Hear the latest updates on six sub-projects chosen for the first phase of the E-CAS. UCSC is utilizing the PRP in collaboration with both the Washington University in St. Louis and UCSF. These collaborations involve cross-campus collaboration on datasets that are well into the multi-terabyte sizes. We present how the IceCube computing efforts have evolved over the last 15 years from mostly home-grown solutions to a globally distributed computing infrastructure. It will highlight advantages and disadvantages of such an approach for an experiment with broad science goals ranging from astrophysics to particle physics to geophysics, and what we see in our future as we engage in more external collaborations in computing. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is the National Science Foundations (NSF)’s premier facility to detect neutrinos with energies above approximately 10 GeV and a pillar for NSF’s Multi-Messenger Astrophysics (MMA) program, one of NSF’s 10 Big Ideas. We report on a few hour GPU burst across Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform that harvested all available for sale GPUs across the three cloud providers the weekend before SC19, reaching over 51k GPUs total and 380 PFLOP32s.
